Mitja Gaspari did not receive the confidence of the Slovenian Parliament for another term as governor of the Bank of Slovenia
Although in the secret ballot the current governor of the Bank of Slovenia received the support of 43 representatives for re-election to this position, Mitja Gaspari will not be the head of the BS for the next six years, as he needed at least 46 votes or a majority in the Slovenian Parliament for re-election. Thus, the last Mohican from the so-called Drnovšek era has left the state office. The President of Parliament, France Cukjati, will inform the President of the Republic, Dr. Janez Drnovšek, about the voting results in Parliament today.
In response to President Drnovšek’s call in December for candidates for this position, in addition to Mitja Gaspari, member of the BS Council Boštjan Jazbec also applied. If President Drnovšek proposes him to Parliament, it is almost certain that, unlike Gaspari, he will receive support from the ruling parties. Events at the session of the Slovenian Parliament were closely monitored by the European Central Bank (ECB). Its president, Jean-Claude Trichet, publicly supported the re-election of Mitja Gaspari as governor of the BS. At today’s press conference, Trichet did not want to comment on the voting, stating that he had not yet received official information from Ljubljana. (D. Košarić)
