The Italian car manufacturer Fiat intends to enter the group of the top 10 producers in the world by 2010, reports the Roman daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, citing a statement from CEO Sergio Marchionne.
In a conversation with journalists during the presentation of the new Fiat Bravo model, Marchionne stated that his company hopes this car will successfully compete with Volkswagen’s Golf. "We want to climb at least two places in the world rankings by 2010. These goals are realistic. We want and can grow," said Marchionne.
Fiat currently occupies the 11th position in the global manufacturer rankings. Marchionne also announced that Fiat aims to establish a new international alliance in the next six months, and Chinese media reported on talks with the Chinese company Chery regarding a possible joint venture. These discussions are the result of an agreement from the second half of 2006 to expand cooperation, under which the Chinese company will also supply Fiat with 100,000 engines for vehicles produced in China and other parts of the world, reported the official daily newspaper China Daily.
